HoC Home Affairs Committee Thursday 18 April 2013

The work of the Home Secretary

Meeting started on Thursday 18 April at 10am. Ended at 12.12pm

Witnesses

Rt Hon Theresa May MP, Secretary of State for the Home Department

****

There's a short section on the Communications Data Bill - watch at the above link, starts at 11:22:45, ends 11:34:30.

Theresa may has clearly not heard of the Skype transparency report, and misleadingly claims that the CBD is needed to track the source of 999 cals. It isn't - that's already covered by other legislation.

Thanks for the link Andrew, albeit not to my mind much of a blow to the Home Sec. This is exactly the kind of thing that annoys me about politicians:

Hubbard (beligerant): Hopes to put Home Sec on the back foot but by making himself a clear enemy actually succeeds in regressing the argument back to spin on the Home Sec's original terms
May (closed and defensive): Digression/avoidance/repetition of standard lines
...
Ellis (surely a blatant stooge or toady?): factual innacuracy (some might say lying, "I couldn't possibly comment") and a question with no purpose other than to feed the Home Sec a grandiose punchline

Sadly, I don't feel this session particularly got us anywhere in terms of a moderate debate on the CDB. A lot of posing and drawing up of battle lines, but...
