The Manx government has given itself extra time to consider whether its residents should keep their right to enter the UK without a passport.
It has extended the consultation period to examine whether it should come under the UK's e-border security regime.
If it remains outside, then the island will become a weak spot, through which criminals might pass, forcing the UK to demand to see all incomers' passports.
The Treasury minister said she is "committed" to UK free border control.
A consultation period, due to end on 17 May, has been extended until 8 June for the government to consider further submissions before reporting back to Tynwald.
