E-borders still stuck against the EC

A group of MPs has warned that there appears to be no progress made on sorting out data protection issues with EU member states in relation to the e-borders programme.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said there is still a need for a conversation with the EC to clarify what is required to make the programme compatible with freedom of movement.

In a report in December 2009, PAC said the practice of providing passport data to the UK Border Agency (UKBA) may be contrary to one of the three fundamental freedoms of the EU – the freedom of movement of people.

Unfortunately, in its latest report the committee has complained that the situation appears no clearer. The report said the UKBA was unable to inform the committee of any specific progress on the data protection issues.
