Carmichael questions e-borders impications (sic) for small boat owners
Monday, 08, Feb 2010 12:00
Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael today questioned Home Office Ministers on their ‘bureaucratic nightmare’ plans of insisting small boat owners register every journey in advance of their departure, as planned in the government’s e-border scheme.
Commenting after his exchange in the House of Commons, Mr Carmichael MP said –
"The links between Scotland and Northern Ireland are long-standing and important. This is especially true in the summer months when leisure craft users will often have itinerary’s that will include Scotland and Northern Ireland ports. The government is now insisting that all such journeys should be reported to them. This is a bureaucratic nightmare and will cause real practical difficulties for many yachtsmen and women.
"I also question why this information needs to be gathered, these are people who are travelling from one part of the UK to another. Ironically it is possible to travel from the Republic of Ireland (a foreign country) into Northern Ireland without any checks being made or information being supplied."
