PM puts his faith in e-borders scheme
Wednesday, January 20, 2010

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said e-borders will help prevent the UK from facing an attack like the failed Christmas Day attack in the US.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Brown said the country's watchlist will be extended, with e-borders technology ensuring no one considered a threat is granted entry.

"Our e-borders scheme is a vital component of our strategy to strengthen and modernise the UK's border controls. It has already achieved significant success, enabling nearly 5,000 arrests for crimes which include murder, rape and assault," he said.

"As a result of the £1.2bn investment we are making in the e-borders system, we will by the end of this year be able to check all passengers travelling from other countries to all major airports and ports in the UK, whether they are in transit or whether the UK is their final destination, by checking against the watchlist 24 hours prior to travel and taking appropriate action."

Gordon Brown says that travellers will be checked against a Watchlist ' 24 hours prior to travel ' -- does that mean the end of ' turn up and go ' ? In other words , you can't go anywhere at short notice.
Why has the press not picked this up ?

It looks like the 24-hour thing only applies to inbound travellers, so that might still be OK though it is likely to still depend on whatever unclear 'official guidance' might have been given to travel operators.

Well it is only OK if one is leaving and never coming back, which looks increasingly attractive.

An update on the intrusive body scanners.

According to the Danish paper, Berlingske Tidende, a German firm has invented and is marketing an airport body scanner which does not show the naked form under the clothing, but simply highlights any parts of the body which the security staff need to investigate.

The Americans are looking at this but, as it's more expensive, I'm not so confident the British authorities will
