‘Stalin Brown’s sea border plans will turn us into pirates’

Nov 16 2009 by Martin Shipton, Western Mail

RECREATIONAL “boaters” who take their yachts across national boundaries will be criminalised unless they comply with an “unworkable” new notification system, it has been claimed.

Under the new e-Borders scheme, which is being phased in over the next five years, skippers of all boats will be required to send full details of their travel plans electronically to the UK Border Agency.

But boaters have launched a campaign against the changes, which they say will ruin their hobby and turn them into “pirates”.

Retired tax inspector Jeff Owen, who lives in Dinas Powys, near Cardiff, said: “My boat has been kept in France for the 10 years since I retired.

“Just who is going to enforce the whole package if instead of seeking an internet facility in France, I simply say ‘Stuff Stalin Brown’ sail home and come ashore eventually at Cardiff?

“If I do lodge a sail plan and it changes, who will care? Is it really suggested that a huge public service infrastructure will be set up to analyse and pursue me?
