Post subject: E-borders plans should be dropped - Conservative MEP
PostPosted: Sat, 19 Sep 2009 08:27:06 +0000
Here is the most recent Conservative Party statement I can find on e-Borders:

E-borders plans should be dropped
http://www.conservativeeurope.com/news/1184/Eborders-plans-should-be-dropped.aspx

Quote:
"These proposals will tip the balance between necessary protection against terrorism and dangerous encroachment on our civil liberties. The right enshrined in the EU's treaties to free and easy movement across the EU will be lost under these proposals and it is time the government rethought them."

The most insidious part of e-Borders is the profiling whereby your travel can be blocked because you match some kind of theoretical profile. I would be interested to know whether the Conservatives plan to scrap the entire project or keep part of it intact as a means of counting people in and out.

Simply counting people in and out is nothing to object to, but they dont need to know your desination or how your going or when you plan to return or your entire itinerary to do that.

Quite. And counting means "1, 2, 3, ..." not "Mr Andrews, Mrs Baildon, Mr Carroll, ...". I don't mind them counting me, but I see no reason why they should record that I passed through unless they can persuade a court there is a good reason to do so.

given how many people share the same name, simply knowing a name i cant see much of a problem with, however a unique identifier is the problem ;)
