I'll be present. I hope others will too. What are the chances? Do enough people know about it and what is happening? Are protests happening at all 6 Interrogation Centres, Birmingham, Cardiff, Croydon, Glasgow, Liverpool, and Sheffield?

I'm up for the Croydon Home Office one, provided I won't be alone!

There is some discussion about this between local group co-ordinators.

I am in contact with No Borders Bristol as to whether we will organise something here.

There is also a separate NO2ID initiative on this which I probably shouldn't give away too many details on. Get in contact with your local group.

Lastly, there are 69 interrogation centres, the addresses of which can be found here.

According to the government:
"From 25 November 2008, we will take an applicant's fingerprints and photographs at six centres (Croydon, Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, and Glasgow) around the United Kingdom as part of the process of deciding whether someone has the right to stay in the country." source

Both Cardiff and Croydon do not have interrogation centres on that list.

The buildings on this list appear more likely - Though that still leaves Cardiff, which is almost certainly going to be the Home office building on Newport Road.

Won't protesting at the Cardiff office on the 25th be pointless if they won't be taking applications at this date? Shouldn't more effort be made at the Croydon centre on the 25th, and Cardiff protests delayed until 10th December?
I'm very interested in protesting at Croydon. What is the planned method of protest, or will this be evidently clear at the time, and unrevealed beforehand for fear of prevention?

Protest pointless?

well ID cards are coming into force on 25th November, this seems a very good reason to hold decentralised protests all over the country.

Hopefully lots of people will protest in Croydon outside the offices they will be issued from. It being a tuesday and the vast majority of our activists having work tuesday daytime means it is somewhat difficult to attend a protest in Croydon, let alone organise one. A lunchtime picket in Cardiff is very much within our capabilities.

Needless to say there will be protests outside the Cardiff centre when it starts taking applications on 10th December.

I'm not British so you might think that I'm not interested in the matter. Yes, I am. I live in the country where we have to have this stupid thing called Id card. For me the legal obligation of having it and showing it whenever requested is just humiliating.

There is blog where I wrote something more about this. Feel free to have a look on it.

Oh yes, and I used one of your pics in my blog. I hope you guys don't mind.

Welcome. You make some very good points on your blog.

The way EU law stands, as I understand it, Poles in Britain will not be forced onto the ID register except in the same ways Britons are, because no discrimination between EU citizens is permitted that interferes with free movement of labour within the EU.

Certainly Liverpool is happening. I understand it is 20 minutes walk from Liverpool Lime Street. I imagine quite an early start is in order. I know of at least 5 groups sending from the North West.

Frankly, we need 100s at each.

Anyone want to provide online street maps (is it the Open Rights group that does the free ones?)? I don't have much time now, but can do later if necessary, but if anyone's got a bit more free time it'd help! :)

My Polish partner is not happy about ID cards here, even though in Poland they have had them since the start of the communist regime. Poles have to be registered as to where they live, and are registered as living in Poland if they own a property there, even if they live abroad. This latter can lead to paying double tax on UK earnings, once to Poland and once to UK.

There is interest. I was phoned last week by someone who is involved in a protest at Sheffield, they were going to email the details but never did so as an organization NO2ID is not aware of what is going on there.

I've been contacted by Sheffield NUS who are keen to get involved. I suspect some NO Borders people will be there on the day.

Can't make it to Croydon? Protest in Brighton!

Visual demonstration to raise awareness that this is the day the first ID cards will be issued!

We will be doing two short stunts, at 12:30 and 13:00. We need as many people as possible to stand in a queue, where you will eventually be either ‘authorised’ or not.

Are NO2ID going to do any sort of Media activity tomorrow? With ID cards coming in it's bound to be on the news.

Considering the media's record on reporting demos (they don't), it's more likely that a well worded press release from NO2ID would have more impact than all these protests combined.*

* No offence to the protests! I'm 100% behind them all! More power to your elbow, etc, ain't no power like the power of the people and all that!

Reports coming in from Glasgow and Liverpool sound like the protests there went well. Haven't heard from the other locations, but I imagine Indymedia and others will be reporting in due course.

I made it down to the Croydon office where NO2ID, No Borders and a few dedicated others braved the wind for an hour or so. Thanks to everyone who turned out on a bitterly cold mid-week lunchtime. A smattering of press photographers, one video reporter and the local paper captured the moment.

The police presence outside Lunar House was quite noticeable (at one point a vanful pulled up, got out to have a look around and have a quick chat to their colleagues before taking off again) and a line of yellow-jacketed Home Office security folks stood around the whole while, looking pretty glum.

NO2ID's letter to the Telegraph - http://forum.no2id.net/viewtopic.php?t=25220 - got some decent pick-up, and the local groups' letters are now surfacing all over the letters pages of the UK. Well done to everyone who got involved - a fantastic effort :D
