well guys, it's over

and i'm afraid it's not all that exciting! :)

i had my meeting with the headmaster

he tried to persuade me to do it again with the same old lines. 'it's not a fingerprint the server is secure etc etc

i told him why i wasn't going to do it
and he even said he agreed with my anxieties about government invasion of privacy, increasing surveillance, police state, 1984 etc

when I told him I felt that he should respect my position. he said the reason they have been applying so much pressure is for 'efficiency' and conformity reasons.

and then he very fairly said to me that nobody was going to force me to do it, and that that is the end of the matter.

so yay I win, even though it didn't get really dramatic

thanks again guys

Well done, you should be proud of yourself!

And now you can tell all your classmates to start asking for their records to be deleted too ;)

Well done! It just goes to show that sober and reasoned argument can win the day, no matter how much huffing and puffing happens beforehand. Your success will help other students to resist fingerprinting in the future!

Just another update, though i'm not sure that anybody will see this thread anymore.

My school have now scrapped the Vericool registration system. It is no longer used to register the students, this is because it was way too inefficient, none of the teachers bothered to use it (it took up to 15 minutes in a lesson to get everyone registered) and basically a waste of time and money. I understand our school was on a 'trial' so we didn't pay for it.

However, the school have kept the vericool 'cashless catering' system, which is where the students have an electronic money account and pay for their school lunch by scanning their finger. They must also still scan when signing in and out of school for lunchtimes, etc.

The fingerprints remain, but it may be interesting to some of you to see that the registration system, at least, has been shown to be awfully inefficient and pointless, contrary to the claims of the company.

Thanks

The update is appreciated. People can be quite patient around here so will wait instead of nagging!

Good that the system was rubbish, bad that it was chucked for the wrong reason.

Can we take it that you remain 'unprinted'?

The work of the state control ID authority is being done for them already! why pay a supermarket to collect when we will pay for it all ourselves through taxes. I feel that the country is asleep to what has been going on and like most people i am guilty of giving up human freedom

That's right, i'm unprinted :) one of two students in the school. The other was in a lower year, and his parents objected until the school gave in.

It is fairly satisfying that the system has been proven to be rubbish in a practical sense (as that is one of their key arguments for using it), but i agree it is a shame that people are not recognizing the real issue with fingerprinting, our freedom.

Thanks for getting back to us. Rather disappointing though, that only two people out of what would I assume is around 1000 pupils remaining 'unprinted'.

The number of people I have spoken to about school and airport biometrics, family, friends, colleagues etc who all say "Oh well if you've nothing to hide then you've nothing to fear" or lines such as "Oh well, if it stops terrorism then I'm all for it"

Something has happened to the people of this country, you would never have heard this sort of talk 20 years ago.
