Sorry if this has been brought up before, but hasn't Israel got a biometric system ?
and doesn't this fail abysmally to deter terrorism ?

You can't say it doesn't deter terrorism. If you ever go to Israel (and particularly Jerusalem) you will realise that without a simple massive security operation all the Israelis would have been killed by now. ID checking is just a part of the massive security. They have been surprisingly good at keeping a lid on terrorism when you see what they have to contend with.
Lets hope we never have to have the same sort of security here.
