We are doing a No2ID stand at a local show this weekend. I suggested printing off the Petition form from the No2ID website to have on the stand, but thinking about it I'm not sure that is appropriate. The wording on the petition suggests it will be presented to the Government but I thought that had already happened, and if that is the case, what do I do with the form afterwards!

I could do with some advice on this today if possible because I want to get the forms printed tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

Many thanks
Lorna

It is still worthwhile using that petition. Continue to send completed petition forms to the office so that a further submission can be made to the government in the future. We have altered the format of the petition in Glasgow (same wording so that it still counts) so that e-mail addresses are easier to read and to encourage people to make donations. You can download a PDF from: http://www.no2id-scotland.net/glasgow/glasgow_no2id_petition.pdf

Thanks for that Geraint - is the link you sent any different to the one on the No2ID site? Presumably we could put another column in so that people could opt to be kept up to date on what the local group is doing?

With regard to the "donation" column, presumably funds would then go to No2ID hq (in whatever fashion). We had intended to have a collection tin as a way of collecting a few quid to be able to refund the people who had paid for the banner, badges etc and anything left over would have either been kept for any future leaflets for leafletting campaigns.

Sorry to ask this on here, I can't access the email I use for this campaign from work and want to be able to deal with this asap.

Regards
Lorna

I've just checked - they are the same. I hadn't realised that the one on the main page had been updated. If you do want to add an extra column then that is easily done, but we usually just send an e-mail to everyone who puts an e-address down, inviting them to join our mailing list.

The donation column is really just there to get people to notice the collecting tins and to think about giving some money. Donations to our stall stay within the local group to pay for various materials. Most of it ultimately ends up at HQ anyway, paying for glossy leaflets, badges, T-shirts, etc. but some is used for local printing and other costs.

Geraint, thank you for your help. You have answered my questions.

We have a local mailing list for the local meetings so maybe the best thing would be just to print out the main petition and ask people during conversation if they want to be advised of local meetings, and we could just indicate that on the form, take email addresses before we forward the list onto HQ. Does that sound okay?

The basic form is worded to indicate that by giving us their details, people are assenting to receive further information from the campiagn, so a further column is unnecessary. It is also in our experience likely to be counterproductive, because a "do you want to be more involved" box takes extra effort to fill in, and it will cut down numbers you can contact while at the same time increasing the proportion of impetuous flaky people who turn out to be useless, and discouraging those steadier more thoughtful ones who will actually end up giving more to the campaign.

For the same reason of competeness, and minimising the steps involved please dont transcribe the data and forward it. As soon as the petition forms are completed, please send them to the office, keeping the information you need locally. We send everyone who completes the petition with their address a supporter's pack inviting them to join, and add every email address directly to the newsletter list. It is good to do this while they might still remember signing.

For this reason it is important to get people to write clearly and give their full addresses (inadequate addresses and illegible signatures not only cost us money and time, but they are worthless for the petition element of the exercise - Mr Unidentifiable Scribble is not a valid petitioner. You may find it helps to write a realistic dummy address very neatly on the first line (don't forget to cross it through before sending in the petition). People are subconsciously imitative, and if one signs with a scribble, the rest on that sheet will follow. (So start a new sheet if you spot it happening.)
