“UKBA . . . has been working to bring these new gates online but has paused this process while it completes internal investigations following the departure of Brodie Clark,” BAA said.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that this is the first time that eGates have been mentioned in connection with the Brodie Clark affair.

Jackie Keane's problems with IABS -- implementation dates have slipped from December 2011 to February and March 2012 -- may also account for eGates delays.

And I can't see that splitting UKBA in two will aid in getting coherent decisions made in the near future to deliver in time for the summer ....... (particularly in relation to the extended shilly-shallying that went on in trying to make decisions for the risk-based trial to take place in a coordinated manner as outlined in the report.)

Any idea what the redaction policy was for the Vine report. What was in sections 4.50 and 4.51 that could not be revaled ? Odd that it doesn't give reasons for the exclusion !

Sir

You reported that the deployment of eGates at UK airports was delayed pending John Vine's report on the Brodie Clark affair. The Home Office have in the past claimed that expenditure of public money on these devices is justified by their successful performance in trials at Manchester Airport [1,2]. After inspecting Manchester Airport, Mr Vine said in his report [3]: "We could find no overall plan to evaluate the success or otherwise of the facial recognition gates at Manchester Airport and would urge the Agency to do so [as] soon as possible". In view of which, the Home Office will presumably now explain their reasoning before spending any more of the public's money on eGates.

Yours
