I like the Ctrl one for its graphic impact! (The text would need a rewrite as it overstates things.)

CCTV, in its current dumb human-interpreted form, is not really a NO2ID issue AFAIK. I'm sure there's an anti-CCTV group somewhere that might be interested...

Hi rob,

Thanks for your comments.

I wonder could I trouble you to be more specific about which areas you think are overstated? It’d be a help.

On the question of the cctv. The image I agree is not directly to do with ID cards, but in this instance the cameras are intended to represent the eyes of the database state. Sure there’s dataveillance and myriad other ways of data gathering, but cctv (and ANPR) cameras are definitely part of the mix.

OK, I'll have a go! As things stand, I don't think the NIRN would be on your phone company's database, or your ISP's, or the Oyster card's. They won't be linking your DNA if you aren't on the DNA database for other reasons. And I don't think at the moment they could put it on the NHS databases, but that may change... Also, they dropped iris scanning from the mix.

As I said, I liked the poster, but it's always best not to get caught out on specifics. Hope this helps.

Hi Rob,

Thanks again for your input.

100% on not getting caught out on specifics (and indeed, honesty) - couldn’t agree more. Iris scanning, we can just drop from the text.

To the other points, granted, at the moment, the NIRN won’t be on the phone company’s database, or my ISP’s or the Oyster cards. But one of the things that scares me about the use of any NIRN, and why I object so strongly to the ID cards and the NIR is the way it will be used further down the line. Function Creep. Today’s applications seem (at a cursory glance) rather innocuous, but in a few years time, who knows?

The threat I perceive is that when the government system of Identity Management comes in (complete with the NIRN) the aim must be to cut across the silos of information where my data is currently held, and provide as exhaustive a portrait of me as possible. And whilst I’m not against a little bit of data matching for the purposes of efficient delivery of services, I’m very wary of TIA type scenarios.

For me, there’s no question that once the infrastructure of the NIR and the NIRN is in place, it will be used for more than is currently specified.

If the para were to read: ‘In time, the government will be able to connect your phone calls, internet searches etc’…would that be better? What I’m really trying to get at is the potential for abuse that the system will have - when I can’t get an oyster card, or an internet account, without providing a NIRN, when all my various activities are linked with a single Unique Personal Identifier like the NIRN, when my life is an open book.

I see what you're driving at, and they are certainly trying to achieve that capability (but through the Intercept Modernisation Programme, rather than the National Identity Scam). But there is surely plenty of scope for alarming people about ID without resorting to function creeps that haven't been announced? I would suggest drawing on the publicity material put out by NO2ID head office for some well-founded text.

But a further thought: what were you planning to do with the poster? If the idea is to offer it up to the campaign for anyone to use as they wish (which sounds like a decent idea) then whoever publishes it will want to put their own text on it anyway, I'd have thought. In which case you could probably save yourself the bother!

Great "control" poster. I'm not worried about the words at this stage - if NO2ID want to go with it, then Guy or Phil can simply do a re-write.

As for a cctv campaign, go to Charles Farrier's site http://www.no-cctv.org.uk/.

Anonymous bosh, are you fully involved with our campaign? If not please send me a message and we can have a chat.
