Children's private details uploaded onto national database

INFORMATION on more than 30,000 children in Derby is to be put on to a controversial national database from June.

Data relating to all the city's children will be input into the Government's ContactPoint system, which has been dogged by delays because of to fears over its security.

Despite a delay in uploading information from 51 authorities, Derby City Council has been told that data on city children will be collected from June.

The council is sending out a leaflet to homes across the city alerting parents to the new database.

Councillor Les Allen, city council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "The project is still on course for an official launch in 2010.

"We are working hard to ensure the data is correct and secure.

"It will be invaluable in keeping young people safe and we believe it will be robust and secure."

It appears to me that the only children who should be on Contactpoint are the only children being shielded.
