An as-yet-unreported question in last week's Sunday Times YouGov poll shows public opinion 3 to 1 against increased official access to personal data.
| Quote: | The Government has announced new data-sharing laws to allow public bodies, including town halls, access to your personal data held by other government bodies. Ministers say this will reduce inefficiencies, while critics say it is in breach of data protection laws.
Do you think this proposal will or will not give the Government too much access to your personal data?
Will give too much power - 65%
Will not - 19%
Don't know - 17% |
http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/pollresults.htm - scroll about half way down the page to find the question.
This is all the more significant as it clearly refers to the Bills currently introduced in Parliament, including the appalling Coroners and Justice Bill and the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Bill - both of which contain sweeping new data sharing powers.
The government can't even pretend a popular mandate for these powers. They are purely for their own convenience and increased control. _________________ Phil Booth
