Harman calls for DNA review in 2012 Wednesday, May 26, 2010

But in response to the Queen's Speech, Harman said the government should test to see if innocents' DNA has been useful after the three year deadline.
"Why don't they retain the records they have and then - in 2012 - review the evidence to decide whether it is safe to dispose of them earlier?" she asked.
"If that shows that there is no need to retain DNA longer than three years we will not object. But if the evidence shows that six years is necessary - then give the victims the benefit of the doubt."
Scrapping projects like ID cards and ContactPoint, which were very unpopular with some Labour MPs when they were in power, was not addressed by Harman.
There's no need to wait - we've been doing the experiment since 2004, and retaining innocent people's DNA on the database does not make it more effective at detecting crime. See: viewtopic.php?p=113669#p113669
