Details of almost 6600 children as young as 10 are being held on the Scottish DNA database, even before it gets tougher on children under new legislation going through parliament.
Charities have claimed the situation is at odds with the idea of raising the age of criminal prosecution to 12 and it risks criminalising young people.
The Herald can reveal there are 6594 young people on the database under the age of 18 and some 1187 under 16, including 210 girls.
As of April 1, 2010, there were 272,618 profiles on the Scottish DNA Database, including more than 42,000 women.
The total includes 156,989 convicted criminals, 2579 people charged but not convicted of a violent or sexual offence, and 113,050 pending cases.
