Cameron accused of being criminal's friend

David Cameron was accused of being the friend of criminals as Labour stepped up the pre-election war of words on criminal justice.

Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary, claimed the Tory leader was more interested in civil liberties than catching and punishing offenders.

He criticised Conservative positions on the DNA database and CCTV cameras and joked that prisoners would be more likely to back the Conservatives if they had the vote.

And he signalled hundreds of rapists could go free under the Tory plans to cut the length of time the DNA of innocents is kept on the national database.

It came as Labour launched a new web advert showing a burglar on his way to breaking into a house talking of his support for Tory policies.
