'Sick society' warning as number of criminal checks on children doubles

The Government's anti-paedophile vetting regime has led to a doubling in the number of children forced to undergo Criminal Records Bureau checks over the last six years.
More than 125,000 under-18s are now having their backgrounds checked each year - up from just 62,000 in 2002-03.
The high number of checks, disclosed in the report, An Education In Mistrust, sends a 'damaging signal' to young people, according to civil liberties campaigner Josie Appleton.
