Criminal checks on helper parents 'a necessary chore'

PARENTS attending a primary school's Christmas carol service are being forced to undergo checks to prove they are not paedophiles.
Criminal checks will be carried out on more than 20 parents at Somersham Primary School who have volunteered to walk pupils to a morning carol service.
They will accompany the 330 pupils just 500 metres down the road to nearby St John's Church in a move described by school officials as a "necessary chore".
Governor Phillip Holley, from Woodhurst, said he did not personally agree with the requirement but it was the school's responsibility to keep children safe.
He said: "Unfortunately, it's just something that in this modern society we are legally obligated to do. I have no doubt the parents will not all be behind the vetting.
