Oct 12 2009 by Gwenda Thomas, Western Mail

New rules designed to protect vulnerable children and adults come into force today, as Gwenda Thomas explains

The scheme is one of the UK Government’s key responses to the Bichard Inquiry, which followed the Soham murders by Ian Huntley and focused public attention on the way people who work with children are vetted.

The resulting inquiry recommended a new scheme that would ensure that everyone working with children or vulnerable adults is checked and registered.

The Welsh Assembly Government is fully supporting and implementing this scheme.

Gwenda Thomas is Deputy Minister for Social Services
