Patient access to medical records over the internet is to be rolled out to 100 practices.

Hadfield Medical Centre in Glossop, Derbyshire, was the first GP practice to enable to a patient to view their medical record over the internet just under a year ago and since then eight other practices have joined the project.

Now GP computer supplier EMIS and GP-run company PAERS (Patient Access to Electronic Records Systems), who jointly run the scheme, hopes to extend the system to 100 practices.

Sean Riddell, managing director of EMIS, said that of the nine practices offering patient access to records the top practice was currently logging about 330 medical records viewed per month.

He told EHI Primary Care: “The next stage is to increase the number of practices wishing to participate up to about 100 and for them to recruit patients in to the project.” ...

So when you next apply for job what's to stop your future employer 'inviting' you to show them your medical record to find out what sort of conditions you may suffer with or how much time you have had off sick? Or what is to stop insurance companies doing the same thing before they agree to giving you cover? Or a family member coercing you to show them your record to prove you aren't on the pill, or have had an abortion or suffering from an STD and so on?

This is ill conceived.

This is a perfect example of how things can be good and bad. It is good that patients can check thir info, bad it is also dangerious.

As it has already been pointed out, there is a risk of family members wanting to access records.

There is also the question about how secure the patients computer is. If thet gets hacked, then so does the record.

Insurance compaines already get a lot of access (more than a lot of people think) if you want to take out insurance or make a claim (in some cases they can get full access). Chances are the insurance compaines and ocupational health providers will in the future ask for access to the spine along with every other Tom, Dick or Harry, such as school nurses, chemist.

Employers can already ask your GP to confurm a questionaire with your 'consent' (in reality if they ask and you say no, you dont get the job and it can be doe by one of the admin staff).
