From the newletter of Birkdale High School. Rather chilling reading when you think about it in historical context - children denouncing each other to the 'caring authorities'. Especially when you think about the drive to identify the future criminals at nursery. What does this exercise do to people so denounced or more insidiously to the denouncer. I do hope they all filled in the opposite of what was asked for and all the 'good pupils' are now sitting in isolation rooms wondering (in best Kafka fashion) what went so wrong in their lives!
The paragraph reads:
Year 8 carried out a Behaviour Survey on Monday when we sat all the boys in the Hall and provided them with a list of names from the entire year. They were asked to identify a maximum of five boys who (a) might disrupt their lessons, (b) could be unpleasant to others and (c) are thoroughly well behaved in lessons. Our behaviour database monitoring indicates a higher profile of issues for this year group and we want to get to any potential problems at an early stage. The vast majority of boys are of an exceptionally high calibre and we will not tolerate a few distracting them.
The whole process is a good example of ‘Pupil Voice’ and support will be made available for those seen in a negative light, whereas rewards will follow for the consistently positive pupils. The procedure was carried out in the strictest of confidence so that we might uncover any issues which occur out of teachers’ supervision.
