You might have thought I was referring to history, I wish it were the case but if anyone doubted what ID cards would be used for here is a preview of things to come.

The government is funding the roll out of fingerprint security at the doors of pubs and clubs in major English cities.

Funding is being offered to councils that want to have their pubs keep a regional black list of known trouble makers. The fingerprint network installed in February by South Somerset District Council in Yeovil drinking holes is being used as the showcase.

If it accepted in pubs, no matter how gradually, they have won.

We need a NO2ID Yeovil. This plan has been piloted there for sometime now and one club in particular has been the guinea pig. I have been following the spam in the papers about it. Not only that but it appears this town is a bit of a stronghold for obedient public 'servants' not scared of pushing the agenda further forward than most other places. I notice it is a town with a few dodgy government & other kinds of institutions, which might be a little off topic here, but the proposed ID interrogation centre is something else to note with respect to this place. It’s a bit of a Milton Keynes kind of town if you know what I mean!

It's time to send in the No 2 Id beer mats.

Seriously this is a very worrying development, part of me wants to see them try and bring this scheme into Brighton. They would have some serious resistance.

We need activists dressing up as gestapo, stoping people outside pubs. Exposing this big brother farce for what it is. We need drunk people 'acidentally' spilling their beer on expensive scanning equipment.
Pickets and boycotts of pub's involved in this scheme.

The problem is that the TV/Films trick people into believing all of this is inevitable, and 'the future'.

Worse still, it is portrayed as 'cool'.

Be careful saying it's a 'Nazi' scheme and thinking everyone will be on your side, there are a lot of twisted people out there who will think of that as a positive thing.

How frustrating and depressing...but people are right, protests outside affected pubs are needed. Perhaps a press release in their local papers. If I could travel down there I would but I have been publicising this on my blog and trying to spread the word as much as I can up here in Scotland. If they even tried that up here I think they would hit a pretty heavy backlash.

Or instead of protesting just don't go to pubs with these things installed.

Watch them rip them out when no-one is buying the beer.

Could someone clarify if they are keeping the fingerprints of all punters or only checking for a match with known troublemakers? If its the latter I cant really see the problem unless you have been convicted of fighting in pubs in which case you shouldnt be allowed in anyway IMO.

Just wait until there is a case where someone is either assaulted and the police check who was in the pub by accessing their fingerprint database.

Or some damage was caused or money went missing.

It would be quite possible for the wrong person to be charged and even so everyone on the database would be interviewed.

Then they could be entered onto police files with their DNA taken.

Its only a matter of time.

if the pub does not retain fingerprint records and *only* compares them to known troublemakers that cant happen

I dont believe that will be the case. Has anyone confirmed the fingerprints will not be stored?

Also they can change it to store data.

As they roll out the NIR over the coming decades it is the intention of the government to cross check everyone and everything.

The article says neither as far as I could see, which was why I pointed out perhaps someone should actually find out this is what they intend to do before getting all worked up

Not a case of getting worked up rather a case of police wanting access to all people at the scene of a crime and something which they are sure to push for.

actually it is because you had not read this:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/crime/article ... 78,00.html

which shows there will be a central database. But you did not know that, merely satisfied to assume it would be so without bothering with any research. If you want to convince people to go against the database state you must have evidence to back up claims else the general public simply will not listen (and even then I am very worried joe public really cares about it enough to stop it)

http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=22277&in_page_id=34

The Metro story on the front cover states that

"Drinkers could be asked to leave their fingerprints at the bar everytime they buy a pint in a pub or club. They may also need to show a passport or a driving licence and their details will be held on a database available to police"

That's a pretty specific report, so time to get 'worked up'.

If the ID card scheme gets in then you will have to show you ID card rather than passport or drivers liscence. No doubt this will create a record on the NIR.

Come on people this is the start of function creep. Soon you will need your card to prove your idenity at any number of places. We are moving towards a total survillence socioty.

People behave differently when they know they are being watched, I don't want to live in a socioty whereby big brother is watching every single one of my movements. It's a huge infringement of my civil liberties and my right to privacy and I simply will not stand for it

I assumed correctly then. I am sure that people will soon be convinced and that eventually databses will be accessed by the police.

The evidence of details stored on databases would be generally known soon anyway.

The public will soon listen when we start to get horror stories regarding these databases.

So get off your high horse and stop being so patronising.

What are the chances that in the next five years people will be scanning in to inner city pubs to buy dodgy CD ROMs or memory cards filled with fingerprints, obtained on the very same type of scanner they logged in on. I bet the serious gangs are already looking at spoofing fingerprints Diamonds are Forever style or similar.

I would imagine the general consensus amongst NO2ID’ers is that they won’t drink in a boozer where they have to be fingerprinted at gun point. Perhaps Blair and his cronies are worried about groups of us plotting in inns up and down the land like here;

Let me just may one point clear about what kind of a place Yeovil is. In Yeovil there is quite a large employment in the military and aerospace industry. A lot of the Southwest is like this and Thales is a company just up the road which I have been told is working on ID orientated computer technology.

To work in a place like this you need security clearance so you see there are quite a lot of people who have that military trained head where obedience and subservience has been programmed into them by professional psychology. These people are not allowed to talk about their work and most have probably signed the official secrets act. This is why I think they think they can get away with it in places like these. Either you get paid £50k/year in defence research or you clean toilets for a living, there is little employment between the two.

Something I found sinister in the metro report was this.

"Some landlords were reluctant to sign up until they were told they faced having their licences revoked – and were given the incentive of being able to stay open later."

so they were blackmailed into doing it, it wasn't a choice.

Yes and that's what the article I posted was saying. Generally along the lines the landlords were not too happy about it until the police had spoken to them. Obviously for this scheme to work it has to be operated in every pub and club so exactly like the CCTV issue, no CCTV no licence.

I have a little bit of experience in clubs as I have been helping out our local one on one or two matters to do with licensing. The book of rules I have been told is a couple of inches thick and most of the rules are completely idiotic and over the top. Naturally with so many rules the police could get the licence revoked as easy as anything but the other issue is that many places totally flout the rules. They are 'allowed' to do this with the proverbial blind eye approach. Police are very familiar with the scratching of each other’s backs approach. Say a pub decides to join a police scheme or two, and then they are considered a good pub. One precursor scheme they have been operating for a long time was this pub watch system where a rowdy yob that gets banned in one place automatically gets banned in all the pubs. So you see they introduce this police/pub arrangement in stages, each stage pushes the general scheme of things just a little bit further.

One thing I found really odd was that when we were due to get a £175 000 CCTV scheme introduced in a town with one of the lowest crime rates in the county and the various councillors were making objections in the local rag. Despite the offer of the Home Office paying for the entire scheme they said it was unnecessary and the money should be spent on more police on the beat. Then in a six-month period after this something really odd happened that had been extremely rare in our town. Each week for six months without fail at least one or two shop windows were smashed. No burglary had taken place though; it was always just a mindless vandal kind of crime. I couldn't believe it but now with our CCTV system all this has suddenly stopped. From twice a week to more like maybe twice a year.

It is outragous that Pub owners should be forced to fingerprint their guests in their own private pubs. The government has absolutely nothing to do with pubs and should not have any envolvment. Certainly not this kind of carrot and stick approach to fingerprinting people.

When I heard about the finger printing of school children and biometric passports, Id cards I thought things were going extremely wrong but this is just beyond ridculouse. Even George Orwell did not forsee getting fingerprinted to buy a drink. Ok it is not the end of the world but if this kind of thing is already happening I would hate to think what isn't being revealed to the public, and what else these terrocrats have up their sleaves.

Yes but ultimately this incredibly forceful drive is driven by fear. They fear us and they know people no longer believe them and they know that once the floodgates are open wide enough then they are ultimately doomed. With so much guilt that these top people have they know that if things swung right against them then they could well be the ones sitting in jail 20 years from now. So it’s both a very bad sign but more significant it is the measure of their fear against a serious public backlash and the last thing on earth they would admit to is how worried they really are.
