My university is running a scheme whereby science undergraduates can take up a three week placement in a local school as a teacher's assistant. It is well paid and comes with no further commitments.
If I was to submit to a CRB check some time in the next six months, in order to be accepted on this scheme, would that place me on the NIR database?

I would say probably not - unless something has changed recently. I stand to be corrected of course...

Radio 4 programme just finished mentioned that 9 million people who work with children will all have to be checked out!
Too much of an oportunity there not to place it on the NIR, me thinks!!

The CRB check I belive just checks you out. it doesn't add any data about you to thier systems.
The fact it may be added to the NIR sometime in the future, shouldn't put you off being checked out to work with children.
And you will eventually be added to the NIR anyway, we all will be. As they've told us they will at first use the data they already have on us to populate the NIR with data about us.
I think the name of the game is to keep your NIR record as bare as possible for as long as possible. By renewing you passport and not using the new ID cards, until we can hopefully beat it.

Last I heard, the Home Office was working on designating CRB check certificates but I'd have thought it unlikely to happen in the next 6 months.
