Rather than leave the thread to reach one month without a new posting, can I ask, pace its sub-title, what are we doing now ?

What are you doing now? A forum is an open place for reader announcements. The campaign itself has a newsletter and press releases, and that's logically where you should look to find out what some collective "we" is doing....

Esteemed Guest, thank you so much.

Clearly, a thread called "current campaigns - what we are doing now" shouldn't be interpreted as a source of information on "current campaigns - what we are doing now".

Maybe it should be removed though, before someone else gets confused. I forgot the post-modern imperative, obviously "what we are doing now" is posting to a message board.

I think perhaps that "we" should be interpreted as "we, interactive forum users,". Our guest is right. There are better places to get information about what others in the campaign are doing, particularly the fortnightly newsletter.

Geraint,

good to read you, of course you're right. My point was that the thread was a month old without a posting, so - paging "Guest" - here in Hackney we are
- looking to build lnks with black and minority ethnic groups
- building our base in South Hackney, seat of Margaret Hillier MP and junior Home Offiice minister for ID
- spreading the word to the people who will have to implement the ID scheme
We could do more, but then we're the wrong side of Hadrian's Wall !

Hey Hackney Unison

There's a current statement from the government that "the unions have backed ID cards" after a National Policy Forum held at the University of Warwick. Do you and your union agree with this? If not, maybe you could be at the forefront of the enquiry by Unison into exactly how they support ID cards? I think it would strike a significant blow if Unison made an official national statement that it was not in favour of the scheme. If Unison does support ID cards, were you consulted in your union's standpoint, and if not, why not?

Apparently there's also a TUC conference in Brighton 8th-11th September at The Brighton Centre and No2ID are having a presence there, so if you're free you could get a scooter and pop along and recreate scenes from Quadrophenia, or just hand out some leaflets and engage the public in debate, whichever suits. :)

Hello MW,

I think it's more likely the case that unions haven't said they oppose ID cards. The unions had a lengthy agenda at Warwick, and don't forget that their "core business" is protecting their members' terms and conditions of employment - social / political issues necessarily have a lower priority.

That said, Unison (and the GMB, and possibly other large unions) have passed No2ID-type resolutions at their annual conferences.

All No2ID members and sympathisers who are in a union should be writing to their general secretary to find out how they're taking their union policy on the ID scheme forward.
