Even though we are ex-directory & TPS we still get lots of sales calls. As we have Call Display I can ignore the "Unknown" (overseas) calls, but I have to answer the "Private" ones (UK number with held) as it might be my wife ringing from work.
I know there are technical solutions to this, which I am considering, but the question I want to ask here is as we are ex-directory how do they know our name? They always do.
I have & will take action, but if you start asking the wrong question they ring off. I did get the source out of one firm, but it led to a UK call centre who gave out a defunct residential address in Scotland. As there was no way of finding out what information they had on us, a complaint was made to the Information Commissioner, who is investigating. Not holding out too much hope on this though.
Most often this is because you've supplied your details including phone number to someone somewhere, and not opted out of the 'marketing information' section. I believe once you've agreed on this, that company or its affiliates can contact you indefinitely even if you are on the TPS. Also, certain less reputable ( yes there is a scale ) marketing companies use the TPS directly to identify people who are less likely to be contacted, and hence more likely to pickup. I'm on the TPS, and I keep being called by the same people. They haven't phoned recently, just as well, as they keep asking for some-one who I know has never lived at my address in the last 30 years !
