Post subject: Renew for Freedom - still a worthwhile approach?
PostPosted: Fri, 26 Sep 2008 19:51:06 +0000
Hi

A while ago on these pages it was suggested that. since ID cards woul only come in with the eventual renewal of passports, it might be a good idea to renew your passport early and so to but another 10 years' freedom.

Is this still a good idea?

Most grateful for thoughts.

Well, it's just things come and go in the media. I think that is a little old hat myself and we should engage more with trying to make ID cards an election issue. The SNP are taking big swipes at Labour while saying they have always been against ID cards. Other parties should take note that ID cards have real political currency at the moment. The Conservatives have a campaign about it but nothing in their policy documents that I could find while looking on their website the other day. We should not take it for granted they will make it an issue, and I see this hanging in the balance somewhat. It's all about timing and doing the right thing at the right time. Switching in and out of strategies to keep them on the run is good, and I think everyone has elections on their mind. This is the one bit of power everyone still has and must be used to full effect. Brown is weak now and we should not let him hide away from these issues. In interviews he should be asked about ID cards and should not be allowed to waffle his way out of it. Let the press know the kind of questions that you want answers to.

As far as I know, yes!
The NIR doesn't exist yet but time is running out so the sooner the better.

Post subject: Questioned by the Passpory Office "Why Renew...?"
PostPosted: Sun, 28 Sep 2008 17:42:10 +0000
Recentl, I went to a passport office to renew my old passport and I was immediately asked "Why do you want to renew it... you still have x years of mileage left in your current passport?"

I think that question gave away the whole secret! i.e that BB does not want any of us to renew their current passport for loads of reasons!!!

Bottom line is, everyone, renew your non-biometric passport while you can.
