Hi,

I am intending to renew my passport ASAP. But the since it has another 6 years left on it is this going to be a problem? The Passport service website/literature keeps mentioning the line 9 months in advance. How long have others who have renewed had left on theirs?

The minister has confirmed to us in writing that you will receive a passport valid for ten years, plus (if UKIPS/HO decide to give it to you) up to an additional 9 months on top of that. They can't issue an adult passport valid for less than 10 years without seriously changing the rules and their own internal processes.

Direct UKIPS quote:

"No, our policy has not changed. You may still renew your passport whenever you wish, as the new passport will run from when it is processed and not from the date on which the old passport expires. Up to a maximum of 9 months unexpired time may be added to your new passport when renewing before the expiry date. Any further remaining time however will be lost."

Thanks, I was just anticipating some potential hassle since there is so much time remaining and it will probably be obvious to the that I am renewing it simple for this purpose!

Here's my comment in another thread:

Just received my new passport today - and it's not chipped; yipee! My old passport still had four years to run, but I've replaced it as part of the Renew for Freedom campaign. Because it had some unexpired time, those marvellous people at the passport office have added nine months to its validity - so I now have a non-biometric passport right up to March 2017! Odd, because last week I got replacement passports (5 years) for my children. The documents were about to expire, and despite the fact they are only valid for five years, the new ones both have a chip. All passports came from Durham - what are they up to, I wonder. The passports from Durham came within a fortnight, so they can't be overwhelmed with people renewing for freedom. Is there any information about how well the campaign is going? Difficult, I know - I don't expect the pisspot office will be releasing statistics!

So yes, it's easy to renew it and there's no hassle, no matter how much unexpired time is on it. DO IT NOW! The sooner you do it, the less chance there seems to be of getting a biometric one.

I've only learned about what's planned in the last two weeks, so I'm going to Newport to renew my passport on Wednesday. I don't feel like putting my current address on my application because I don't want to start the government off with a freebie- after all, the address given for a passport will be the first place targeted for an id card order.

The passport advice line has said that if I go in person I may need two forms of id with address before the passport is given to me, eg bank statements. When I suggested that perhaps I was a person who lived on the fringes of society, with no bank statements, she said, ah well, you'll have to explain that to them when you arrive, maybe it'll be ok. I got the feeling she had no clue.

Has anyone renewed in person and knows whether or not you do have to provide two forms of address id? I don't want to trek all the way to Newport and take a day off work to no purpose.

For any who are interested in the answer, I undertook a trip to Newport and got it renewed in person, with no proof of address required. It also had no chip, possibly because it's a same day creation.

The Passport Helpline is apparantly notorious for giving out incorrect, and sometimes totally false, information.

hiya, my passport is finishing at the end of this month, i need to get it renewed, but im also going on holiday in a few weeks what is the quickest way of getting the old passport renewed in time for the holiday?

You can get it renewed within one day, or within a week, if you are prepared to pay more than the standard fee and visit a passport office in person. Details on the IPS website: http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_renewing_when.asp

Hi , i desperately need my passport and it is in the homee office, it had aready passed 90% of the time from which they were supposed to return it .but i am travelling to athens on 22nd ansd also need to get a schengen visa, is there anything i can do to speed my passport up and get it quickly from the home office?

A passports renewal application must include two new passport photos. These are to calculate two inches by two inches and be a full-face view against a white or off-white background.
