Does anyone know if the law requires an employer to photocopy a passport just for a job interview? I am quite happy to show it for an interview but am reluctant to allow copies to be taken given the number of interviews I am attending. Thanks in advance

I'm of the opinion that a prospective employer can view documents at an interview (if requested, I never have been), but I wouldn't allow copies to be made unless I was subsequently offered a position, at which time I would be more amenable to the idea. After all, if I don't get the job, why do they need to have a copies of my sensitive documents lying around (and how can you ensure they destroy them)?
Like Junkmayle, when I was jobseeking recently I attended quite a few interviews (let's say 10 for computation's sake). If all the prospective employers took copies at the interview stage then that would be 9 copies of my passport in offices around the country for no good reason.

That was exactly my concern, Mr Bester
