Hi
Does anyone know if I will get hoicked in because I am changing my name?

I have just discovered our true amily name and want to change my surname to it.

Will this cause a problem for the powers that be?

Hopefully! :D

Seriously - I don't think so. I guess you're refferring to changing your name after you get an ID card, in which case as long as you let them know within a reasonable amount of time you won't have anything to worry about. However I don't know how long they consider a "reasonable amount of time" to be, and if you don't tell them soon enough you could be fined.

There is no identity register yet, and therefore no problem as far as the ID scheme is concerned. Just toddle along to your solicitor and they'll sort you out with the paperwork. (Although AFAIK your name is simply whatever you are known by, so you should just be able to start using it, but I expect your bank will want something more official looking before they change your account...)
