Just ot be absolutely clear, can someone give me a yes or no answer?

I renewed mine last year sometime (the exact date eludes me now), and I have recieved a chipped passport at the price of 70-odd quid.

Will my passport be part of the new system already? Am I in line for inputting into the ID card database?

Many thanks.

As far as I am aware, having a chipped passport doesn't automatically make you 'first in line', and it will be your next renewal that would in theory be the one that goes into the NIR data-swamp, if it exists by then.

If you consider one of the main aims of the ID/NIR scheme is to list all addresses a person has lived at and the fact that your address is not part of your passport it is almost 100% certain that no you are not.

If by the new system you mean the National Identity Register then since it does not exist you can not be part of it.

In order for you to be in line for inputting into the NIR you would need to be in a situation once the NIR is implemented that required registration on the NIR e.g. you if you are a non-EU citizen or an airport worker etc. If that situation doesn't arise before your passport requires renewal then that would be the next occasion when your data would end up on the NIR. Even when the NIR goes live for UK citizen passports it will not initially apply to renewals but only to new passport applications (although that situation will change in the fullness of time and likely before its time for you to renew).

That was the reasoning behind the Renew For Freedom campaign: give yourself as much time as possible before you are in a situation where registration becomes a necessity.
