Will it be compulsory for Irish nationals to carry ID cards from Jan 1 2008? Even though they do not have an Irish passport (or indeed any passport). It might be a bit inconvenient if my wife is carried off by police while out shopping at Morrison's.

The slightly longer answer is that it will be somewhat harder for the UK government to force Irish people to register than British citizens, unless they successfully lean on the Irish government to adopt a parallel and interoperable scheme. (It might well be tried by laundering the policy through the EU.)

No, the UK Government cannot compel Irish Nationals to carry an ID card. Mr B'liar forgot about the 1948 Nationality Act that grants Irish Citizens the right of abode and freedom of travel within the UK.

They will as even foreigners staying for a few months must conform.

This being the case, as a wheeze, could I apply for irish citizenship (in doing so surrendering my British citizernship) and assuming I was granted it, continue living in the UK with the buggers monitoring my every move?

Although apparently e@borders will not be enforced between Northern Ireland and the republic, and 'the Home Office said it "had no immediate plans" for passport checks on travelers from Ireland to Britain, it would mean that anyone traveling between the the Republic and the mainland would need to carry a passport so that information about their movements would be available to the UK.

The taoiseach said that if the UK was introducing such measures the sensible thing for Ireland would be to introduce a similar system.
