The hunt for rioters and looters will go on for at least two years as police trawl through thousands of hours of CCTV footage from this month’s disorder, The Times has learnt ...

After years of criticism of the “surveillance society”, police feel that the power of CCTV as an investigative tool is finally being proven in its inquiries in London, Manchester, Birmingham and other riot-hit cities and towns ...

Home Office sources said that the importance of CCTV in catching rioters would influence the regulation of the technology planned under the Protection of Freedoms Bill, which is currently before Parliament ...

Moderation: moved to Civil Liberties, as there isn't really a Database State angle on this.

can anyone say knee jerk

speaking as a law abiding citizen I object to having my every move watched just in case I perform some criminal act

and CCTV is only proving it's worth as a means of catching the bad guy after the event, which is something we already knew, it doesn't prevent anything, it's not a deterrent, it's a means of sitting back and allowing crime to happen then going and catching the perpetrators, unlike a physical police presence which acts as a deterrent

but I suppose if you use arrest rate as a metric in preference to crimes committed then the bias will always be in favour of cleaning up rather than prevention
