Intrusive database

Telegraph View: If the Government believes the DNA profiles of the entire population shoud be kept, it should put its case directly to voters.

Last Updated: 5:40PM BST 05 Apr 2009

...

Since it was Labour that incorporated the human rights convention into British law, it is somewhat perverse for the Government now to cherry-pick the rulings it likes and ignore those it does not. In Scotland, only the DNA from innocent people involved in sexual and violent crimes is retained and then only for five years. If this approach is good enough for one part of the kingdom it should be extended to the rest. If the Government believes the DNA profiles of the entire population should be kept, then it should put its case for doing so directly to the country.

Chances are, the voters would be all for it.

I'm a voter and I'm not.

Let's qualify that ... All Sun and Telegraph readers would be all for it. And, no, I'm not going to apologise for tarring all the readers of these two ghastly publications with the same brush.

I've been a Telegraph reader for at least 20 years, and I'm not in favour.

Both newspapers and their readerships are more various than stereotyping based on transferred prejudice suggests, and I would in any case never write off any group as lost to arguments for liberty.

So that's dismissed the biggest 'red top' readership (2.9M) and the biggest 'broadsheet' readership (0.8M). Perhaps we should just pack up and go home?
