Mr Brown hit back: "I take it you and your Liberal authorities support CCTV?
I can confirm this. Our district council are approx 50% Liberals and they voted for an entirely useless CCTV in a conservation area which was being put in place to solve something it was demonstrated to them it would never solve, i.e. unruly drunken violent behaviour. The reason that appeared to swing the decision was that elderly people had written to the council demanding something be done about a local trouble spot in proximity to some of their homes. The council said they had a duty as a council to protect people but they were still wanting to push this through even though it would not achieve the stated purpose. They did take note of the opposing argument and did agree with it but on balance they decided another CCTV was best, mainly, I think because they said a policeman would be far too expensive.
So in order to be effective the Liberals must practice what they preach on a local level and as with our council they should decide to take another look at CCTV and revise their guidelines in accordance with the actual evidence. Also I'd like to see them pass motions to do what they can lawfully to block ID cards on a council level. I do think there is a lot of political local will amongst them but maybe a bit of coordination would be the way to go. After all it is the local government where they hold power.
