HOME Secretary Charles Clarke last night admitted plans to bring in compulsory ID cards were in trouble.

Public support for the scheme has slumped amid spiralling costs and Clarke has also been stung by America's decision to delay their 'biometric' visas blueprint.

This hi-tech system for tourists prompted the Government to push forward with ID cards. But while Clarke branded reports of the cards costing £300 'mad', claiming the Home Office estimate of £93 each could be cut, he said: 'People are worried about the cost.'

With pressure growing from all sides, Clarke will be anxious to allay these fears before the key vote on June 28, when MPs could decide to reject the Bill
