Is there a time-line of the proposed introduction of I.D. cards anywhere? Spacifically as a GB Passport owner when is the last chance to re-new it before I am made to have biometric data taken?

A page on the No2id website about this would be useful because it isnt in the F.A.Q

No one can give you a definite date. The Home Office say that they intend to start enrolling the general population some time in 2010. That may happen. It may not. Or perhaps the start date will be brought forwards for some yet-to-be-defined categories of people.

No further legislation is required and the Home Office may start taking people's fingerprints with no prior announcement. As an organisation, the Home Office tends to be excessively secretive.

You would probably be safe leaving renewal until the end of this year, but the advice for anyone who is particularly concerned about the prospect of having their biometrics demanded remains the same - renew as soon as possible and buy yourself 10 years of grace. It may even work out cheaper in the long run if passport fees increase as expected.

Hi

The link to the government's identity card site is broken on this page:

http://www.no2id.net/IDSchemes/FAQ/index.php#6

At the 'When will it be implemented' section. The link being - http://www.identitycards.gov.uk/

Is 2010 definitely the case? That's the quote I heard too, but just wanted to confirm it. If so, do you think if we tell people that they'll be getting ID cards next year, it sounds a bit more ominous and may spur a few more to action, possibly?

The act mentions 2010 too, e.g.

Quote:
6 Issue etc. of ID cards

(7) Where an individual who is not already the holder of an ID card makes an application to be issued with a designated document, his application must, in the prescribed manner, include an application by him to be issued with such a card unless—
(a) it is being made before 1st January 2010;
(b) the designated document applied for is a United Kingdom passport (within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971 (c. 77)); and
(c) the application for that document contains a declaration by that individual that he does not wish to be issued with such a card.

Of course, you can opt out of the card but not the database, etc.
