If you need to visit the United States - renew now and get an ePassport (required from October).
The British e-passport presumably meets the requirements imposed by the US on passports
issued on or after 26 October 2006. However, according to the links below, previously issued machine-readable passports that include a digital photograph will still be accepted under the Visa Waiver Program even after that date.

issued on or after 26 October 2005, and that any machine-readable passport issued before that date will still be accepted.

The British passport application form includes a declaration that "I am, today, in the country of application and will be at the time of issue." The form also asks for "Permanent address", without any stated implication.
http://www.fco.gov.uk/Files/kfile/App%20C1.pdfIs it possible to renew a passport at a British consulate when
temporarily abroad, giving a UK permanent address whilst in another country of application? If so, then it may also be possible to renew at a UK passport office when temporarily in the UK. It would then be useful to know
how it is
